Government of Prince Edward Island - Department of Health and Wellness

Provides oversight to health services in the province in accordance with the Health Services Act.

Oversees the following divisions of the provincial government:

  • Minister's Office

  • Sport Recreation and Physical Activity

Funding available to help with the cost of glucose sensor technology (Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) or Flash Glucose Monitoring Systems) to monitor sugar levels in individuals with diabetes.

Supplies that are eligible for coverage include:

  • Abbott Libre2
  • Dexcom G6 sensor or Dexcom G7 sensor
  • Medtronic Integrated (CGM) Guardian 3, Guardian 4 Sensor or Guardian Connect CGM

Once approved, sensors can be purchased in person from any PEI pharmacy at a reduced cost. Out-of-pocket cost is based on household income and private health insurance coverage.
Eligibility runs from the start date noted on the approval letter/email to June 30th each year. Annual applications are required and must be received by July 1st. Applications can be sent in up to three months before the deadline.

Provides eligible applicants with financial assistance to help pay for approved drugs for certain conditions including, but not limited to:
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis
  • Cancer
  • Crohn's Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Plaque Psoriasis
  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Psoriatic Arthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Provides coverage for approved medication costs including:
  • HIV treatment medication
  • HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) medication
  • HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) medication

Provides eligible applicants who have been prescribed oxygen for the treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with coverage of up to 50% of approved home oxygen expenses to a maximum of $200 per month.

Assists with the costs associated with approved insulin pumps and supplies.

The program covers up to 100 percent of costs. The amount depends on annual household income, private insurance coverage ,and device costs. See website for full details.

Notes: Application deadline is July 1 each year. Existing recipients must reapply by the deadline to keep the current coverage.

Provides coverage for certain diabetes medications and contraceptives, and expands access to blood glucose test strips. Some examples of contraceptives and diabetes medications eligible for coverage include:

  • Intrauterine devices (IUD)
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Diabetes oral agents
  • Insulin

Eligible applicants may receive up to 100% cost coverage for out-of-pocket expenses associated with purchasing approved ostomy supplies. Maximum coverage available between July 1-June 30 each year is $2,400 and is calculated based on household income.

Ostomy supplies eligible for coverage include:
  • Skin wafers
  • Ostomy pouches
  • Adhesive removers
  • Skin barrier wipes
  • Stoma powders, pastes and barrier rings
  • Ostomy belts

Provides eligible applicants with financial assistance to pay for approved nutritional supplements that have been recommended by a dietitian to treat phenylketonuria (PKU). Includes:

  • Full cost coverage for eligible special low-protein formulas
  • Annual coverage up to $3600 for specialty food items carried through the National Food Distribution Centre
