Medical Transportation Assistance

Programs that provide transporation to medical appointments or help offset the cost of travel to medical appointments in and out of the province.

Provides low-income individuals living with cancer an annual travel allowance to help cover the costs of travelling to cancer related appointments. One travel allowance is granted per year per person.

Note: Recipients of the Social Assistance Program or Accessibility Supports (Disability Support Program) in Epekwitk / PEI are not eligible for the Travel Treatment Fund.

Provides transportation for individuals with mobility, visual or hearing challenges. Details include:

  • Transportation in specially equipped vans that feature hydraulic lifts, ramps, special tie-downs and safety seat belts
  • Provides non-emergency stretcher transportation
  • Offers sightseeing tours for visitors
  • Can provide a wheelchair at no extra cost
  • Can transport patients to other Maritime provinces, NB and NS
  • Can accommodate group bookings
  • Flexible with hours and transportation locations (may be able to provide transportation outside the Maritimes and at hours outside regular times if arranged in advance)
  • Inexpensive, flat rates within the Greater Charlottetown area, mileage fees apply outside the area

Provides transportation for individuals with disabilities and older adults who are in need of affordable transportation. Transportation is in specially equipped vans that feature:

  • Hydraulic lifts
  • Ramps
  • Special tie-downs
  • Safety seat belts

Transportation can be booked to Summerside and Charlottetown for medical appointments.

Provides accessible transportation for individuals with disabilities, older adults, and families who are in need of affordable transportation. Wheelchair accessible vehicle is available.

Provides cost assistance for travel and accommodation to eligible people who have to travel outside the Maritimes (PEI, NBk, and NS) for transplant surgery.

  • Travel: By reimbursement only. Applicants can claim up to $1,500 every six months for one round-trip by car or economy plane, bus or train ticket.
  • Accommodation: Applicants may be eligible for $2,500 per month to assist with accommodation costs. Utilities and other living expenses are not eligible.

In partnership with the PEI government and Health PEI, travel subsidies are provided for eligible PEI residents who must travel out-of-province for their medical appointments. Services include:

  • Confederation Bridge Toll Pass
  • Northumberland Ferry Pass
  • $100 Esso Gas Card for patients who receive the bridge or ferry pass
  • Hotel Accommodations
  • Uber eats (offered to patients who are receiving a hotel stay through Hope Air)

Islanders who have been pre-approved for out-of-province medical services may be eligible for travel assistance to appointments in NS and NB through Maritime Bus.

Note: Applicants must apply at least 10 days before out-of-province travel, and the application must be approved prior to purchasing tickets.

Provides access to a registered nurse who is assigned to assist Islanders receiving care at QEII Health Sciences Centre in Halifax or the Moncton Hospital. The liaison nurse is stationed at the hospital where the patient is being cared for and can help PEI patients and their families:
  • Connect with other health care professionals
  • Locate programs and services that are available to help
  • Assist with the discharge process from an out-of-province hospital
