Fire Marshals Office

Conducts fire inspections, investigates complaints related to fire hazards from the public, completes plans review in new construction, provides public fire prevention education, and carries out fire investigations for PEI, except Charlottetown.

Legal Aid Division - Legal Aid

Provides free legal representation and assistance to income eligible individuals who have serious legal needs in the areas of criminal law, youth criminal justice, and family and civil law.

Legal and Court Services Division - Court Services

Provides support to Supreme Court, Provincial Court and the Court of Appeal and assists the public by providing information, filing or registering legal documents, and other matters related to the Courts. Types of court matters this office can provide assistance with include:

Legal and Court Services Division - Positive Parenting from Two Homes

Provides online and in-person information sessions to parents who are separating, divorcing or parenting from more than one home.

Topics covered include but are not limited to:

Children's' experience of separation
What Children Need
Parenting Plans
How to Develop a Business-like Relationship with the Other Parent
Legal Information

Program coordinators screenparticipants for the program and ensure that co-parents are not in the samegroup.

Legal and Court Services Division - Positive Parenting from Two Homes for Kids

A school-based program for children who are experiencing changes in their lives due to parental separation, divorce or parenting from two homes. Trained facilitators work with school guidance counselors to guide children through age-appropriate activities and discussions. Topics include:

Definition of family
Changes that separation and divorce bring to a family
How separation, divorce and parenting from two homes affects children
Children's concerns about how the parents separating or divorcing will affect their future
Ideas on how to help children talk with their parents

Legal and Court Services Division - Public Trustee and Public and Official Guardian

Helps to oversee the financial and/or personal affairs of individuals who are incapable of doing so themselves and who have no trusted family or friends to do so for them. Types of assistance provided by this office may include:

Protecting the legal and financial interests of children under age 18 years
Establishing and maintaining an infant Trust
Protecting the legal, financial and personal and health care interests of vulnerable adults who require assistance in decision-making
Acting as an independent interest for minors or persons with disabilities on insurance settlements or in court matters with financial implications to the person
Administer the estates of missing or deceased persons

Legal and Court Services Division - Supervised Parenting Time and Exchange Program

Provides a safe, neutral way for separated or divorced parents to have supervised parenting time or supervised pick-ups/drop-offs. Services include:

Supervised parenting time so a child can spend time with their parent in a safe environment
Supervised drop-offs and pick-ups to reduce risks of conflict when children move from one household to another

Provincial Court - Court Services

Judges of Provincial Court hear cases and exercise powers given to them by laws enacted by both the federal and provincial governments. Cases heard in Provincial Court include offences under the following legislation:

Provincial Court - Paying Court Ordered Fines and Restitution

Receives payments from people who have been ordered to pay financial restitution by Provincial Court as part of their sentence or who have received a fine under certain PEI laws such as:

Highway Traffic Act
Environmental Protection Act
Trespass Act
Off-Highway Vehicle Act
Cannabis Act
Liquor Control Act

Note on parking tickets: Parking tickets issued in Charlottetown must be paid at the Charlottetown City Police station and parking tickets issued in Summerside must be paid at Summerside City Hall.

Provincial Court - Youth Justice Court

Hears cases where the defendant is between ages 12-18 years and is alleged to have committed a criminal offence(s).
