Criminal Law: Court, Community and Correctional Services

Provides free resources and support to racialized people to learn about their legal rights in the areas of family, immigration, and criminal law. Includes:

• Legal information and publications in plain language
• Support navigating the justice system
• Access to free legal advice for up to four hours from lawyers who have completed trauma-informed training and anti-racism training
• Access to legal clinics hosted by Justice Avenues in community spaces
• Referrals to lawyers and other relevant community supports

Highest court in the province that hears civil and criminal appeals from the lower courts and from administrative tribunals.

Provides online information and resources to help people understand the process of preparing for and participating in an appeal including:

• Practice Directions
• How to Commence and Respond to a Civil Appeal
• How to Commence and Respond to a Criminal Appeal
• Information about criminal and civil procedures

Case schedule can also be found online.

Provides assistance to youth who have received a Probation Order from the Courts. Such orders require the offender to comply with specific conditions while on probation and each offender is assigned a Youth Justice Worker to help monitor their compliance.

Note: While people can contact Youth Justice Services at any time with questions about services and programs, offenders should contact the Youth Justice Worker assigned to them for matters specific to their personal case whenever possible.

Provides online information about PEI's Provincial Custody Programs. Includes:

• Adult Custody Information Handbook
• Guidelines for Serving Weekend and Intermittent Sentences at the Provincial Correctional Centre
• Custody Centres:
  • Provincial Correctional Centre (Charlottetown)
  • Prince County Correctional Centre (Summerside)
  • PEI Youth Centre (Summerside)

People who are the victim of a crime reported to police may be eligible to receive money to help with eligible expenses or losses. Examples of types of expenses and losses that may be covered include:

• Lost wages
• Pain and suffering
• Medical or dental expenses
• Financial assistance to assist victims who have a child born as a result of sexual assault
• Funeral expenses if the crime resulted in a death

Property loss and damage expenses are not eligible.

Provides assistance to individuals who have received a Probation Order from the Courts. Such orders require the offender to comply with specific conditions while on probation and each offender is assigned a probation officer to help monitor their compliance. Other services or issues dealt with by Probation Services may include:

• Alternative measures
• Conditional sentences
• Fine option program
• Presentence reports
