Service Description
Provides low cost accommodations to families with a child age 18 or younger who has an appointment, treatment, surgery, or other medical reason to visit the IWK or another medical facility in Halifax. Services offered during stays include:
- Private bedrooms
- Shared bathrooms
- Linens, towels and complimentary laundry facilities
- Full kitchen and dining area (guests must supply their own food and clean up after themselves)
- Home for Dinner program that offers families a home cooked meal three times a week
- Complimentary bread, milk, juice, coffee
- Common living room, television access, public computer with internet access, and free wi-fi
- Arts and crafts area, playroom and outdoor playground for children
- Recreational activities for families

Eligibility:
Applicants must meet the following:
-Be the parents/guardian of a child under age 19 who is a patient at the IWK Health Centre or another medical facility in Halifax for an appointment, treatment, surgery, or other medical reason.
-Live a minimum of 80 km away from the House (under extenuating circumstances, shorter distances may be approved)
-First time stays need to be referred by hospital staff (social worker, doctor or nurse)

How to Access:
First time stays: Ask hospital staff, your family physician or social worker for a referral * Returning stays: Call to make your request as soon as medical treatment dates are scheduled (parents, caregivers, social workers or medical staff can make returning stay calls * Space in the house is limited and room availability cannot be guaranteed at the time the request is taken, so it is suggested families have a back-up plan
