Service Description

The public can report suspicions or unfair business competition and cheating in federal government contracts.

As a law enforcement bureau, the Competition Bureau is responsible for administration and enforcement of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act, and the Precious Metal Marking Act.

Examples of types of anti-competitive activities the Bureau investigates:
  • Price-fixing
  • Bid-rigging
  • False or misleading representations
  • Deceptive notice of winning a prize
  • Abuse of dominance position
  • Exclusive dealing, tied selling and market restrictions
  • Refusal to deal
  • Mergers
  • Multi-level marketing plans and schemes of pyramid selling
  • Deceptive marketing practices
Types of issues the Bureau does not deal with:
  • Bad service dealings
  • Billing problems
  • Collections agency harassment/problems
  • Contractual disputes
  • Information enquiries about a person's or business' reputation or legitimacy
  • Refund issues
  • Store return and/or refund policy
  • Unethical behaviour issues

The federal contracting fraud tip line is jointly operated by the Competition Bureau, Public Services and Procurements Canada, and the RCMP. Information provided is shared amongst these organizations.
