Guide Dogs

Provided by: CNIB Foundation - PEI - AKA: Formerly Canadian National Institute for the Blind

Service Description

Provides two types of guide dogs for people with sight loss:
  • Guide Dog: A guide dog is partnered with a youth or adult with sight loss. Helps with mobility and fosters independence by avoiding obstacles, stopping at curbs and steps or negotiating traffic
  • Buddy Dog: A buddy dog is partnered with a child who is living with sight loss
A two week guide training course is offered at a centralized hotel. Following the training, an instructor travels to the participant's community and stays for one to two weeks to make sure that transition goes smoothly.

Training is free and the owner is provided with assistance to feed the dog for its entire life. Veterinary bills may be covered upon approval (see Guide Dog Assistance Fund).
