For Individuals: Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit

Service Description

Provides income support to employed and self-employed individuals who are unable to work because they must care for their child under 12 years old or a family member who needs supervised care due to COVID-19. This applies if their school, regular program or facility is closed or unavailable, or because they are sick, self-isolating, or at risk of serious health complications because of COVID-19. This benefit is done in one week periods.

Eligible households can receive:
  • $500 ($450 after taxes withheld) for each one week period
  • Up to a total of 42 weeks between September 27, 2020 and October 23, 2021. The 42 weeks do not need to be taken consecutively. Applications can submitted up to 60 days after a period has ended.
  • If caretaking began part way through a period, that period can only be applied for if more than 50% of work was missed that week.

Employed and self-employed individuals who are unable to work because they must care for their child under age 12 years or a family member who needs supervised care due to COVID-19.

For every one week period that is being applied for, individuals must:

-Have been unable to work at least 50% of a scheduled work week because of caring for a family member

-Have not received or applied for:
*Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB)
*Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB)
*Short-term disability benefits
*Employment Insurance (EI) benefits
*Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) benefits

-Reside in Canada (live and have a home in Canada, but do not have to be a citizen or a permanent resident)

-Be present in Canada

-Be at least 15 years of age

-Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

-Earned at least $5,000 in 2019, 2020, or in the 12 months before applying. This can include income from some other benefits or employment (employed is total/gross pay and self-employment is net pay)

-Not be receiving paid leave from their employer

-Are the only person in the household applying for the benefit that week

How to Access:
Apply online (applications are done through CRA My Account) or by phone * Must reapply each week * Each one week period starts on Sunday and ends the following Saturday. You can apply on the first Monday after the one week period you are applying for has ended.
