Service Description

Provides income support to employed and self-employed individuals who are directly affected by COVID-19 and are not entitled to Employment Insurance (EI) benefits. The CRB is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Recipients can receive either:
  • $1000 ($900 after taxes withheld) for a 2-week period
  • $600 ($540 after taxes withheld) for a 2-week period: For those you have already applied for 21 periods (42 weeks) or applied for the first time after July 18, 2021
Individuals can apply for a total of 27 eligibility periods (54 weeks) between September 27, 2020 to October 23, 2021. The 25 eligibility periods do not have to taken consecutively. The benefit can be applied retroactively for any period up to 60 days after that period has ended.

Note: Applicants can be employed or self-employed while receiving the benefit but the income cut off is $38,000. For every dollar of net income above $38,000, $0.50 will have to be reimbursed to the CRA on income tax returns for that year (2020 or 2021).


Employed and self-employed individuals who are directly affected by COVID-19 and are not entitled to Employment Insurance (EI) benefits.

For every two week period that is being applied for, individuals must:

-Have not been employed or self-employed for reasons related to COVID-19 or, had at least a 50% reduction in average income compared to the previous year or not been working due to COVID-19

-Have not received or applied for:
*Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit (CRSB)
*Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit (CRCB)
*Short-term disability benefits
*Employment Insurance (EI) benefits
*Quebec Parental Insurance Plan (QPIP) benefits

-Reside in Canada (live and have a home in Canada, but do not have to be a citizen or a permanent resident)

-Be present in Canada

-Be at least 15 years of age

-Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

-Earned at least $5,000 in 2019, 2020, or in the 12 months before applying. This can include income from other benefits or employment (employed is total/gross pay and self-employment is net pay)

-Must not have quit your job due to reduced hours on or after September 27, 2020 unless it was reasonable to do so

-Were seeking work and have not turned down reasonable work during the period being applied for

How to Access:
Apply online (applications are done through CRA My Account) or by phone * Applicants must reapply every 2 weeks if they need continued coverage * Each 2 week period starts on a Sunday and ends on the Saturday the following week.
