Service Description

Community organizations host free tax preparation clinics and arrange for volunteers to prepare income tax and benefit returns for eligible individuals who have a modest income and a simple tax situation.

Clinics are held at locations across PEI and tend to run March-April.

Information

Eligibility:
Individuals with a modest income and a simple tax situation.

This may include:
-Ages 65 ears and older
-Housing-insecure individuals
-Indigenous Peoples
-Modest-income individuals
-Newcomers
-Persons with disabilities
-Students

In general, a simple tax situation means you have no income or your income comes from the following sources:
-Employment
-Pension
-Benefits such as CPP, disability, CCB, EI, social assistance
-RRSP
-Support payments
-Scholarships, fellowships, bursaries or grants
-Interest (under $1,000)

Income eligibility (total income):
-One person: less than $35,000
-Two people: less than $45,000
-Add $2,500 for each additional dependent

Volunteers do not prepare tax returns for complex situations such as:
-Returns for deceased persons
-Individuals who file for bankruptcy
-Self-employed individuals
-Individuals who report capital gains or losses
-Individuals who report employment expenses, or business or rental income and expenses

How to Access:
Dependent on location: may be by appointment, virtual, walk-in or drop-off and pick-up
Documents Required:
All applicable information slips and receipts such as: Identification * T4's, T5's, T5007's, etc * Receipts for medical expenses * Any receipts for charitable donation made and not previously claimed (within previous 5 years) * Tuition receipts (T2202A) * A copy of the previous years Notice of Assessment (if possible) * Banking information to sign up for direct deposit (if applying)
