Service Description

Federal benefit to help pay for oral health care for eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to dental insurance and have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000. Services covered include those that keep teeth and gums healthy and treat problems that may occur. For example:

  • Preventive services, including scaling (cleaning), polishing, sealants, and fluoride
  • Diagnostic services, including examinations and x-rays
  • Restorative services, including fillings
  • Endodontic services, including root canal treatments
  • Prosthodontic services, including complete and partial removable dentures
  • Periodontal services, including deep scaling
  • Oral surgery services, including extractions

The cost covered by the plan is a percentage of the total and based on income. See website for details.

Applications are accepted on a scheduled basis:

  • Phase 1: December 2023
    • Ages 87 years and older
  • Phase 2: January 2024
    • Ages 77-86 years
  • Phase 3: February 2024
    • Ages 72-76 years
  • Phase 4: March 2024
    • Ages 70-71 years
  • Phase 5: May 2024
    • Ages 65-69 years
  • Phase 6: June 2024
    • Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate
    • Children 17 years and younger
  • Phase 7: 2025
    • All remaining eligible Canadian residents


The Government of Canada has contracted Sun Life to manage the Canadian Dental care Plan (CDCP). After applying, the information will be shared with Sun Life, who will complete the enrollment.

Appointments with an oral health provider can be scheduled after the date provided in the welcome package that is sent out after enrollment.

To continue to receive the benefit, all eligibility requirements need to be met annually.

Eligibility:
Must meet all of the following criteria:
-Have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
-Not have access to dental insurance
-Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes
-Have filed your tax return in the previous year
-Canadian residents who have access to dental coverage through a social program can still qualify if all other eligibility is met
